Depending on your child’s condition and needs, our paediatric eye specialists may recommend these following tests:
We check how clearly your child can see up close and far away using pictures, shapes, or letters, depending on their age. To see if glasses are needed, our optometrists use lights and lenses held in front of the eyes.
A gentle light is shone into your child’s eyes while different lenses are used to see if they need glasses. This helps detect shortsightedness, longsightedness, or astigmatism.
Your child will be shown colourful pictures or patterns to see how well they recognise different colours.
We observe how your child’s eyes move and work together by asking them to focus on an object while doing some tests, and also to use their eyes to follow a toy or light. This helps us check for squints or hidden eye misalignment.
These tests look at how well both eyes coordinate, including depth perception (3D vision) and focusing ability. Your child may look at pictures or wear special glasses briefly.
Using a specialised microscope and a soft beam of light, we examine the eyelids, lashes, pupils, and front of the eye to ensure everything is healthy. The light may feel bright for a few seconds but causes no pain or discomfort.
Using a special, fun-looking headlight, the doctor can check the health of the back of your child’s eyes. It helps catch ocular conditions like cataracts or retinal issues early.
Special eye drops may be used to relax the eyes so the doctor can check for conditions such as lazy eye, retinal problems, cataracts, or glaucoma. Dilation drops may also be used to do cycloplegic refraction, a simple process that can determine the actual refraction in children. The drops may sting briefly and can cause temporary blurring or light sensitivity for a few hours, which is normal. Sunglasses can help your child stay comfortable afterwards.

We’ll guide you through the documentation and submission process right at the clinic, so you can focus on your child’s care and comfort.

1. At what age can my child start seeing a paediatric eye specialist at The Children’s Eye & ENT Centre?
Children can be assessed at any age. At The Children’s Eye Centre, we see babies, toddlers, pre-schoolers, and school-age children. Common complaints are frequent eye rubbing, excessive blinking, crossed or misaligned eyes and blurring of vision. Early detection is key, so if you are unsure of the underlying cause, it is always better to have your child’s eyes checked sooner rather than later.
2. What should I bring for my child’s appointment at The Children’s Eye & ENT Centre?
To make your child’s visit as smooth as possible, please bring along your child’s identification card or birth certificate, any previous medical records, your child’s existing glasses (if they have them) and a referral letter (if available). You may also want to bring your child’s favourite toy, snacks, or comfort item to help them feel at ease during the consultation.
3. How long does a comprehensive eye examination take?
Eye checks can take up to 1-1.5 hours depending on the complexity of each case. Some patients may require eye drops to dilate the pupils, hence more time would be required.
4. What does an eye examination consist of? Can I consult the doctor immediately without pre-evaluation tests?
Preliminary eye tests, done by our specialised eye care professionals, help our team gather important information about your child’s vision and eye health before you meet with the doctor. These tests include checking your child’s visual acuity (how clearly he/she sees), 3D vision, and eye pressure. By doing these tests first, our doctor has a more complete idea of your child’s eye condition. Thereafter, further investigations will be done in order to diagnose and provide appropriate treatment options.
5. Is my child’s visit to The Children’s Eye & ENT Centre covered by insurance or Medisave?
Coverage depends on your corporate insurance policy. Some corporate policies may require a referral letter from your panel GP. Routine consultations and investigations done are not Medisave claimable. Only surgical procedures done in the clinic or hospital qualify for Medisave coverage. Our clinic team will be happy to help clarify what is covered before your visit.
6. How much does a consultation with our paediatric eye specialist at The Children’s Eye & ENT Centre cost?
Consultation fees typically range from SGD 180 to SGD 250. Other eye investigation fees range from SGD 200 onwards, and this will vary due to case complexity. Bill size depends on investigations done that are deemed medically necessary by our doctors. For a more detailed estimate tailored to your child’s eye problem, our friendly team will be happy to assist your queries.
